Outcomes

Purpose

The purpose of this first meeting is to bring together top-level academics, policy makers and civil society representatives to exchange experiences on: 


1. What are the major challenges the region faces in the  assessment of sustainability, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change?


2. How can evidence based policy making be strengthen in the region within the context of the SDGs and Agenda 2030?


3. Which are the most efficient mechanisms for mainstreaming leading edge approaches (such as Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainty (DMDU)) into the sustainable development policy instruments?

Expected outcomes

Report to Dr. M. Crow, president of ASU, Dr. E. Graue, rector of UNAM, and Lic. M. Vila, governor of Yucatan: “Research agenda  for SVACC: Pathways towards sustainable development” on:


1. Strategy for mainstreaming leading edge approaches (such as DMDU) in sustainability, vulnerability and adaptation assessment tools in the region


2. Education and capacity building means to fulfill within the context of Agenda 2030


3. Partnerships with leading organizations, government agencies, international academic institutions and businesses


4. Financing SVACC mission

to Climate Change (SVACC)

Background

UNAM and ASU have created the Binational Laboratory on Sustainability, Vulnerability, and Adaptation to Climate Change (SVACC) to foster a close partnership in advancing state-of-the art sustainability  assessment and management tools and technologies.
Activities will be centered on the U.S., Mexico, Central-America and the Caribbean, given the seriousness of sustainability challenges in the region and the large asymmetries in available capacities to advance sustainable development initiatives.
